ANTONIO, EL BAILARÍN DE ESPAÑA
Antonio El Bailarín (The Dancer) more than lived up to his famous name. A nickname first earned on the streets at the age of 4, by 8 years-old he was already showcasing his talent to royalty; at 16 he ventured to the Americas for the first time, winning over audiences half a world away. This evocative documentary paints a portrait of the man who brought a breath of fresh air to the gloomy international reputation of a country mostly associated with dictatorship. Performing in a variety of Hollywood films, his fans ranged from Chaplin to Maria Callas, and after receiving gold medals from prestigious dance institutions, he went on to found and direct the Spanish National Ballet. With the same intensity in person as on stage, El Bailarín was notorious for his scandalous social life, ultimately leading him to imprisonment for blasphemy, before fading into obscurity. With valuable contributions from the likes of Aída Gómez, Nacho Duato, Antonio Canales, and Cristina Heeren, this film restores him to his rightful place in history: a monumental figure in Spanish culture who flew the flag of flamenco with pride.
