EL CIELO DE LOS ANIMALES
Every so often, literary critics hail an American writer as the new Raymond Carver. The latest to receive such praise is David James Poissant, and while the director of this collection of short stories-turned-film may have his doubts, he undoubtedly holds Poissant’s debut book in high esteem. What’s more, despite cultural and geographical differences, Santi Amodeo envisioned this anthology of adult tales in Andalusia. Shot on 16mm Ektachrome—a format known for its distinctive texture, similar to that of a slide—the film approaches this exploration of the everyday with raw tenderness, employing an impressionistic style where "each scene is a brushstroke of emotions". This engaging drama’s four stories are united by loss and the deceased, in both past and future, confronting their characters with unexpected and devastating realities.
