GRAN REDADA GITANA: HISTORIA DE UN GENOCIDIO

Pilar Távora | Spain | 2025 | 85 min. | O.V. in Spanish
Gran redada gitana

In 1749, King Fernando VI and the Marquis of la Ensenada, counting on the complicity of the clergy, orchestrated an unrelenting campaign against the Roma population, dubbed the Gran Redada (Great Roundup), which condemned—without cause—over ten thousand people to forced labour, confinement in inhuman conditions, and, ultimately, annihilation. Delving into archives and gathering insights from authoritative voices such as writer Raúl Quinto (National Narrative Prize) and activist Séfora Vargas, this documentary seeks to bring to light acts of enslavement and extermination that have been hitherto absent from history books and academic research. A brave and essential film in which Pilar Távora (Madre Amadísima, Yerma) uncovers and reconstructs this dark episode of our past, an unprecedented genocide whose shadow looms over the marginalisation of the Roma community to this day.
