FANDANGO
Winner of Best Documentary at the Andalusian Film Academy Awards, this fascinating musical road movie explores the essence of one of flamenco’s oldest forms. Fandango is so deeply rooted in popular culture that for this very reason it is often overlooked. Shot in elegant black and white and drawing inspiration from the legendary series Rito y Geografía del Cante, this dynamic and spontaneous reportage traces the journey of fandango from late 19th-century cafés chantants to the contemporary voices of the present-day incarnation. Much like the classic Buena Vista Social Club, Remedios Malvárez and Arturo Andújar capture the soul of this iconic genre by filming performances from a host of outstanding cantautores, including Rocío Márquez, Perlita de Huelva, and Arcángel on the stages of their native Huelva, where the genre was born and continues to flourish. Guided by those who live and breathe fandango, this evocative journey paints an ethnographic and anthropological portrait of an art form that remains very much alive to this day.
