MALECÓN

Carlos Larrazabal| Cuba, Spain | 2025 | 93 min. | O.V. in Spanish

The director behind this compelling drama first travelled to Cuba in 2005 to study at San Antonio de los Baños Film School. He was immediately struck by a desire to portray the everyday life of the nation’s people, "stuck in a state of precarity and driven by survival instinct and ingenuity, but also empowered by a unique sense of community and family". The result of this impulse is the story of a man returning to Havana after serving a prison sentence. The city he once knew has opened up to capitalism, and sex tourism. Soon, he will find himself at a crossroads where he must decide between confronting the harsh reality of his homeland—shaped by the holy trinity of loyalty, friendship, and love—or to set sail on a raft toward an uncertain future.
