Just a few weeks before shooting started on what was to be Laurent Cantet’s final—posthumous—feature, he decided to pass the baton to his long-time collaborator, director Robin Campillo. The result, a testament to one of European cinema’s most committed humanists, is a tender snapshot of manual labour, budding desire and the search for identity. At just 16-years-old, Enzo has defied his bourgeois family’s expectations by embarking on an apprenticeship as a bricklayer, a world away from the life of prestige and success they envision for him. Amid refined elegance at the family villa in the sun-drenched south of France, a constant barrage of questions around his future, hopes and dreams weigh heavy on his mind. Meanwhile, at work on site, a Ukrainian colleague opens the door to a world of unexpected possibilities, where the ominous shadow of war looms large.
