Following her acclaimed debut (Amerrika) and a decade directing major TV series (Ozark, Ramy), Palestinian-American filmmaker Cherien Dabis returns to the big screen to write, direct and star in this tragically timely feature. Just two weeks before filming was due to start, production was forced to relocate due to the war in Gaza. Centring on a Palestinian family saga spanning three generations, from 1948 to 2022, at the film’s heart lies the story of those uprooted by the devastating impact of the Nakba. Premiering at this year’s Sundance and selected to represent Jordan in the upcoming Academy Awards, this complex, intelligent drama raises more—often uncomfortable—questions than it answers about the nature of occupation and the long shadow of exile. An undeniably powerful feature, All That’s Left of You vindicates the beauty of cinema as an act of recognition and remembrance; a question of survival, some might say.
