Awarded the Golden Bear at this year’s Berlinale, the Norwegian director Dag Johan Haugerud concludes his trilogy on human relationships with a poignant reflection on intimacy, writing and sexual awakening. In the trilogy’s latest chapter, we follow 17-year-old Johanne as she falls in love with her French teacher. Desperate to preserve her feelings, she documents her unadulterated emotions and experiences with brutal honesty. On discovering Johanne’s writings, her mother and grandmother initially react with shock but soon find themselves captivated by her talent and begin to share their own experiences of intimacy, desire and lost love. Spanning three generations, their bond gives rise to an ethical debate on the nature of public exposure, posing a question to the audience: should the deeply personal be published for all to see?
