In the words of Walt Whitman, we contain multitudes. This rings especially true for Manfred (a shaggy-haired Mads Mikkelsen), whose condition leads him to believe he’s John Lennon—and forget where he buried the money from a heist his brother Anker (Nikolaj Lie Kaas: The Idiots, Frankenstein) has served the last 15 years in jail for. With Anker back on the outside, the brothers set off on an unconventional treasure hunt, searching not only for the lost loot but themselves in the process. So begins a black comedy so twisted with unpredictable turns it resembles a hybrid of the Coen Brothers and Roy Andersson. Having already earned rave reviews at both Venice and Toronto, Oscar-winner Anders Thomas Jensen—responsible for some of Norway’s most acclaimed independent screenplay—directs another host of eccentric, oddly endearing characters in this darkly amusing, deeply unhinged fable. A celebration of contradiction as a form of liberation and tolerance, because… who are we to judge?
