Switzerland’s entry for the upcoming Academy Awards follows the life of a hospital nurse during eight long, frenetic hours of nightshift: Floria tends to patient after patient with dedication and affection, but carrying the weight of responsibility on her shoulders leads her to make a mistake in a system where mistakes are not allowed. In her latest feature, Petra Volpe (The Divine Order) choreographs a series of agile, Sorkin-esque long takes, tailing her protagonist through never-ending hospital corridors and wards, while tackling a host of controversial issues from healthcare cuts and job insecurity to the feminisation of caregiving. Part social critique, part homage to healthcare workers, this flawless drama is more necessary than ever, an emotional rollercoaster with an electric Leonie Benesch (The Teachers’ Lounge)—one of Europe’s standout actresses of the moment—at the helm.
