RITA
It’s the summer of 1984, Rita is seven years old. While all of Spain is eagerly hoping for the national team to win the European Championship, Rita isn’t dreaming so big: she just wants to go to the beach. However, in her world – a working-class neighbourhood in Seville – reality comes before dreams. If football is the king of television, Rita’s father – like any father back then – is the king of the house, a home where she begins to feel increasingly insecure when she starts to question her family dynamics. With a sensibility close to that of acclaimed filmmakers such as Carla Simón (Summer 1993), Elena López Riera (The Water) and Rocío Mesa (Tobacco Barns), actress Paz Vega presents her directional debut with her first feature film, drawing on her roots to craft a raw and emotional tale without fairies. After her international premiere at the Locarno Festival, Paz Vega returns to her home city with this debut that exudes everyday beauty.
