A father and daughter live a remote existence in an isolated cabin, devoid of any connection with the outside world. Their schedules are out of sync: when he works, she sleeps, and vice versa. Until one day the father disappears while out in the mountains, and his daughter sets out to find him. In an atmosphere of mystery and malaise (with Lynchian undertones), the natural blends with the supernatural in images of fire, water, and wind; life flowing and time passing, marked only by an ever-present absence. Written, directed, and edited by young Argentine filmmaker Sofía Petersen—former student of the prestigious Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola—Olivia was conceived over the course of five years, only taking its final shape on location, adapting to whatever the environment demanded. Filmed in Tierra del Fuego with a cast of predominantly local, non-professional actors, it was shot using natural light on film stock salvaged after its extinction (Ektachrome 16mm), lending this other-worldly drama a distinctive, painterly quality.
