At a public hospital in Milan, Doctor Maurizio Bini offers free reproductive assistance and gender-affirming therapy to his patients, prioritising medical rigor and ethics over the restrictions imposed on minorities in an increasingly polarised political climate. GEN_ strikes gold with its passionate and endearing protagonist, following him as he approaches the twilight of a career marked by care and embracing diversity. This captivating documentary takes us behind closed doors into Bini’s consulting room—in a fusion of styles reminiscent of Nicolas Philibert and Frederick Wiseman—allowing us to witness the profoundly human aspirations of his patients, up against a never-ending barrage of social judgement and legal paradoxes. Both moving and good-humoured in equal measures, and with a warm reception at this year’s Sundance, GEN_ is a thoughtful reflection on healthcare as a space for compassion and empowerment in the face of commercial interests. A powerful message that if there is anything more important than health, it’s dignity.
