Indian-born filmmaker Kopal Joshy travels to Serra da Estrela to film the Covão dos Conchos Lake and its other-worldly crater, created as part of a dam project in the mid-20th century. In a landscape seemingly straight out of science fiction, she uncovers an even more captivating subject of investigation: Carlos, a widower mourning the loss of his late wife—to whom he writes countless letters—who has been living alone in the mountains for years. The camera approaches the bond and trust that develop between the pair with heartfelt sensitivity in this enchanting documentary, its images exuding the majesty of the environment and the intimacy of grief, with moments of budding companionship and consolation sculpted around the frozen surface of the lake.
