Inspired by a moving true story from his native Sardinia, multimedia artist Giovanni Columbu makes his animation debut employing techniques from the early days of cinema and photography. From these humble origins, an innovative animated film emerges. Columbu achieves a sublime purity of expression by blending rotoscoped footage with acrylic and paper drawings, creating loose, impulsive—much like the story they tell—brushstrokes on screen. On the eve of World War II in a sombre Sardinia under the yoke of Fascism, two boys release a herd of military horses: a poetic act of resistance against the prevailing brutality and overwhelming arrival of modernity. The non-linear narrative and impressionistic editing are another triumph of this unique, hand-crafted work of art, falling somewhere between the classic Western and a tragic ballad.
