After the revelation of 2018’s Fortuna (Best Film and Jury Prize in Generation at Berlinale), Germinal Roaux now composes a fresh visual poem, a new meditation on death and the capacity of cinematic language to unravel it. Ángela Molina (Honorary Goya 2021) plays Lena, who while facing the fear of an imminent end in her spacious home, encounters León, a Mayan farmer on the verge of eviction. Privilege and exile come together in a tale of mutual vulnerability as León teaches Lena how to reconnect, this time with nature. Shot in the Yucatán jungle, the Swiss filmmaker’s powerful, parabolic style captures its magical light without exoticising or aestheticising, simply by observing. A fascinating, transcendental and deeply intimate chronicle of the need to reconnect, Cosmos offers up its images as an act of resistance and healing.
