A BALCONY IN LIMOGES
A hidden gem fresh from the Filmmakers of the Present section at Locarno 2025, where it won this year’s Junior Jury Award. Two former high-school friends are reunited, beginning an unexpected and tense coexistence: Gladys is hard up and lives a marginal life, while Eugénie tries to help her against her wishes. Both radical in their own way, the two women represent opposing poles of a society divided between apathy and proselytism, between nihilistic and categorical attitudes. But this ruthlessly sharp comedy by Jérôme Reybaud does not concern itself with moral judgement, gradually revealing multiple layers of meaning as the story unfolds. Inspired by shocking real-life events, Reybaud creates the spatial, temporal, narrative and symbolic structure of his screenplay around the “indiscreet” balcony referenced in the title, before taking an unexpected turn towards an astonishingly brutal finale.
