Budapest, 1957. After the failed uprising against Soviet occupation, a young Jewish man, raised on idealised stories of his late father, suffers a profound shock when a cruel, brutish man appears, claiming to be his real father. Rendered in tones of sepia and deeply cathartic, this historical deep-dive into some of the darkest corners of the 20th century from Oscar-winning director László Nemes (Son of Saul) chronicles a young man’s confrontation with both his family history and his own identity. These dual rites of passage serve as a mirror reflecting the fraught upheaval of the times in the very heart of Europe. Drawing on his grandparents’ personal experiences, the Hungarian filmmaker uses their legacy as the canvas for this masterful drama, encompassing both the ravages of the Holocaust and the tyranny of the Communist regime that left an entire nation in a state of orphanhood.
