THE LOVE THAT REMAINS
After the resounding international success of Godland, Hlynur Pálmason shifts away from epic mysticism to focus on the greyer areas of domestic life. Things never quite work out for newly separated Anna and Magnus when they reunite with their three children in the rural village where they live with the mother. We witness the passing of the four seasons as they reflect their disintegrating relationship—capturing scenes from a (former) marriage in a hypothetical family album, as if striving to preserve everyday moments will somehow shield them from oblivion. The astute lens of the Icelandic filmmaker retains its striking signature 35mm to craft this tender yet bittersweet film. The narrative’s nuanced attention to detail is unexpectedly interwoven with elements of absurdist comedy and magical realism in this tale of a broken family and its ability to adapt to a new, uncertain normal. After all, something still remains.
