SOUND OF FALLING
Winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes, Mascha Schilinski has well and truly stormed onto the cinematic scene with this breathtaking second feature. Sound of Falling follows the lives of four girls on a farm in northern Germany, where hidden events spanning various generations unfold against the backdrop of a turbulent 20th century. Shifting from rural idyll to tragic events, the film’s formidable narrative unravels in a mosaic of images layered and repeated as if perceived through the veil of memory, or nightmare. The camera seemingly floats around the women, spectral figures haunted by the presence of the past, their bodies ravaged by an inexpressible pain. A fusion of Dreyer and Malick in its asceticism and sensuality, the stunning mise-en-scène lingers—much like the secrets of the past—long after the screen fades to black.
