LITTLE AMÉLIE
This dazzling animated feature adapts the autofiction novel The Character of Rain, in which the acclaimed Belgian writer Amélie Nothomb recalls evocative episodes from her childhood in Japan. Through the developing gaze of a young girl during her first three years of life, we are led through a cascade of images that gradually reveal the world around her and her bond with her caregiver. The film's attention to detail is complemented by vibrant expressiveness, brought to life by an outstanding artistic team including Rémi Chayé (Calamity), in a moving portrayal of the awakening of consciousness and the realisation of life’s ephemeral nature. Winner of audience awards at both Annecy and San Sebastián, this charming film evokes the emotional intensity and exquisite poetry of anime auteurs such as Isao Takahata or Sunao Katabuchi. Blending memory with mythology, Little Amélie is a treat for both the senses and the soul.
