UN POETA
Once a promising young poet who never quite lived up to the hype, now divorced, bankrupt, an absent father and a bit of a drunk, Óscar Restrepo finds a path to redemption when he discovers the talent a humble young student. Set in Medellín, the second feature from Colombian filmmaker Simón Mesa Soto is a riotous tragicomedy-cum-acerbic portrayal of the extravagant underworld of failed artistes. At the same time, its sensitive rendering of this eternally aspiring poet—with more failures than triumphs under his belt—and his rather prosaic existence, transforms him into a deserving (not just of laughter) antihero. Winner of the Jury Prize in Un Certain Regard at Cannes and the Horizontes Award for Best Latin American Film at San Sebastián, this provocative social fable invites us to reflect that things could always be worse—whether that’s of comfort or not.
