LITTLE TROUBLE GIRLS
Sonic Youth’s 1995 Shangri-Las-inspired rock ballad about a girl who vows to be good, but bubbling deep inside is the urge to be bad, lends its name to the debut feature from Urška Djukić as it explores the sexual awakening of a Slovenian teenager at a convent choir camp. Winner of the FIPRESCI Prize at this year’s Berlinale, this coming-of-age tale delves into a friendship strained by the hormones of adolescence and the contradictions between faith and burgeoning lust. With an almost painterly quality to its photography and a soundtrack where whispers and sighs blend with the song of cicadas, this mesmerising film offers a fresh and electrifying regional perspective on female desire.
