HISTORIAS DEL BUEN VALLE

In his 2001 documentary En Construcción, José Luis Guerín turned his camera to the Raval neighbourhood, chronicling the devastation wrought by the property bubble. In 2025, he directs his lens toward another district of Barcelona, Vallbona, a peripheral area caught between the rural and urban worlds, now grappling with gentrification. His new report is a blend of imaginaries, tackling social, generational, and identity-based conflicts, as well as a host of urban and ecological challenges. Together, they form a true global village, where the streets and avenues are home to both the first wave of migrants who arrived after the post-war period and the most recent wave of expatriates, coexisting in the apartment blocks of the suburban city. Awarded Special Jury Prize at this year’s San Sebastián, Guerín’s latest film is a measured, dignified, and humanistic look at this humble corner of a changing world.
