VALOR SENTIMENTAL

Joachim Trier | Norway, France, Denmark, Germany | 2025 | 135 min. | O.V. in Norwegian, Swedish and English, subtitles in Spanish and English

After their unforgettable collaboration on The Worst Person in the World, Joachim Trier and Renate Reinsve have done it again. Winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes, Sentimental Value takes us deep into the intimate corners of a cold, crumbling old house. Estranged after their mother's suicide, two sisters—a renowned theatre actress and a devoted therapist—are forced to confront their absent father. A once-celebrated filmmaker now forgotten both by cinema and his daughters, they haven’t seen each other since he abandoned them as children. Stellan Skarsgård, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, and Elle Fanning round out the stellar cast of this tense, poignant comedy-drama. Laced with subtle humour, fractured family bonds are at the film’s heart, deepened by a chronic inability to express affection and the ultimate impossibility of reconciliation. A work of remarkable maturity, Sentimental Value stands as an imposing heir to Bergman’s formal rigor and Chekhov’s dramatic depth.
