Winner of the Grand Prize at Venice’s International Critics’ Week, this provocative anti-war parable begins with an inspired high-concept premise: two soldiers from opposing nations (twins Elliott and Luke Tittensor, House of the Dragon) stand guard on the border between their respective countries amidst the tense neutrality of a non-aggression treaty. Surrounded by barren desert and pounded by a merciless sun, they gradually begin to forget which side they’re on. In his directorial debut feature, Oscar Hudson channels the bold aesthetic and absurdist humour of his award-winning adverts and music videos (Radiohead, James Blake) into an innovative political satire that’s as baffling as it is hilarious. The split screen is just one of several devices Hudson employs to explore the farcical nature of baseless loyalty and a universal illusion: on the other side of the line, even friends become foes.
