ELS MALS NOMS
Pablo Molinero (Jaula, La Peste) brings to life Florencio Pla, a real-life intersex person registered at birth as Teresa, known as La Pastora, who went on to become the last Valencian maquis fighter of the Spanish Civil War. A legendary—albeit a dark legend—figure portrayed as a monster by Francoist propaganda, this thriller masquerading as a biopic portrays their brutal persecution by the Guardia Civil. Marc Ortiz Prades' bold and timely directorial debut strips away an official narrative entrenched in the hatred of difference to reveal a raw narrative without artifice or embellishment. Shot using long, naturalistic takes— reminiscent of Béla Tarr or Nuri Bilge Ceylan—and a 4:3 aspect ratio drawing us closer into the frame, this drama in three acts (childhood, youth, and adulthood) of persecution and transformation is the story of one man’s struggle to acquire the name that truly belongs to him.
