VITRIVAL

Step into the tiny Belgian town of Vitrival, where two young policemen—who happen to be cousins—find themselves investigating a string of mysterious suicides and crude acts of vandalism (penis graffiti, to be precise). After several shorts that blurred the lines between fiction and documentary, Noëlle Bastin and Baptiste Bogaert make their feature debut with this naturalistic (anti-)police film, diving in with observational gusto to the minutiae of rural life. No matter how strange things get, life must go on. With non-professional actors playing themselves, the Bastin-Bogaert duo subverts the codes of classic noir by framing them in everyday routine to extract a goodly dose of the absurd. A dry and delightful tale with shades of Bruno Dumont, Vitrival celebrates—unsentimentally—the intimate yet flawed nature of close-knit community life.
