UN HOMBRE LIBRE

Laura Hojman | Spain | 2023 | 88 min. | In Spanish and French with Spanish and English subtitles
UN HOMBRE LIBRE

This documentary rescues from oblivion the figure of the exiled writer Agustín Gómez Arcos, who reached the pinnacle of French literature at the end of the 20th century. Admired and controversial for his pioneering work on issues such as democratic memory and gender identity during Franco’s dictatorship, Un hombre libre explores these themes through the testimonies of dissident artists such as Pedro Almodóvar, Paco Bezerra, Marisa Paredes, Alberto Conejero, Bob Pop and Lara Moreno, among others. After her works dedicated to Antonio Machado and María Lejárraga (nominated for Best Documentary at the 2023 Goya awards), Laura Hojman delves into the heated words of the author from Almería, who never stopped championing the eternal Spain that spanned La Celestina to Buñuel, and Goya to Valle-Inclán: “One does not rebel out of hatred, but out of love”, he wrote from his exile.
