THIS LIFE OF MINE
Amid a 1950s crisis, Barberie Bichette (or Barbie much to her own regret) copes as best she can with her circumstances, with herself and her somewhat ludicrous behaviour. A posthumous work by the director and screenwriter Sophie Fillières, this vibrant autofiction film full of inappropriate remarks tackles the question of identity through (tragi)comedy and a certain poetics of the absurd, but also of – as Carlo Padial would say – the shame of existing. Agnès Jaoui (Honorary César, 2024) delivers an outstanding tour de force as an endearing character perpetually on the brink of delirium, mirroring the late French filmmaker’s portrayal of our unstable, wandering path through this bitch of a life. Quinzaine des Cinéastes award winner, This Life of Mine is Fillières’ madcap battle cry, her epitaph delivered with boundless, offbeat humour.
