THE CINEMA AS A SPORTIVE CHALLENGE

The Festival welcomes today the absolute premiere of Dear Werner (Walking on Cinema), in which Pablo Maqueda (Madrid, 1985) literally follows in the footsteps of the German filmmaker Werner Herzog on his pilgrimage on foot from Munich to Paris, narrated in the book 'Of Walking in Ice'. "I read it when I was very young and it made a big impact on me," explained Maqueda. "I have always been accompanied by the image of Herzog walking in the middle of the cold and it seems to me a perfect metaphor of the path of cinematographic creation, very hard and full of obstacles". A cathartic project by the filmmaker from Madrid, who, carrying only his gear and two small cameras, followed the trail of the mythical German director, representing and replicating the physical effort necessary to make a film, "which is a little bit what he does in all his filmography". Thus, imbued with the Herzogian spirit of the search for the unknown, Maqueda even managed to establish a correspondence with his beloved Werner, "as if he were to be praying to god".
