TARIKA
As in the Chinese proverb, the flutter of a butterfly’s wings wreaks havoc across an entire rural community. Tarika lives with her father and grandmother in a small hut near the border. A rare bone condition, causing her vertebrae to resemble delicate wings, has made her a source of superstition in the village. When the local livestock are struck down with a mysterious disease, fear begins to spread within the community: all suspicions point to Tarika. The director of this poetic drama infused with the supernatural has long been exploring the processes that give rise to xenophobia and the stigma attached to anything that falls outside the conventional. In his third feature, Lazarov wraps political metaphor in the guise of a fairytale to address one of society’s most pressing issues: the fear of the unknown.
