SWEETHEART
Rebellious young Nico and his devout great-aunt Gela are forced to spend the summer together in the antiquated Sicilian house where she grew up. With Wi-Fi a world away but ghosts very much present, their respective worlds collide: speed and slowness, hyperconnectivity and spirituality. In her mature directorial debut, Margherita Spampinato strikes a delicate balance between the carefree and the nostalgic in this summertime fable, exploring the intergenerational gap and what holds the power to traverse this existential chasm: perhaps little more than loneliness and the need to be heard. Special Jury Prize in Cineasti del Presente and Best Actress (Aurora Quattrocchi) at Locarno stand as testament to the strength of this warm and evocative opera prima, reminiscent of Italian classics from the likes of De Sica or Comencini. An ode to oral tradition, with its capacity to exorcise demons and teach us that nothing—love included—lasts forever.
