François Truffaut
The French director, actor and critic was one of the pioneers of the Nouvelle Vague, and an essential figure in the history of world cinema. In the 50s he worked as a critic on Cahiers du Cinema, among others, and also as assistant director to Rossellini. His terrible childhood led to the film classic Les 400 coups (1958), featuring his alter ego, the character of Antoine Doinel (played by Jean-Pierre Léaud), whose later years were shown in subsequent films throughout his career. He also directed numerous literary adaptations, such as Jules et Jim (1962), Farenheit 451 (1966) and La sirène du Mississippi (1969). He also wrote the extensive book of interviews with Alfred Hitchcock, Hitchcock. His last film was Vivement dimanch (1983) before his premature death at 52 from a brain tumour
