Semmelweis. Today he is remembered as a legend: brave and relentless, a man of both knowledge and hunger for justice. He is known as the saviour of mothers for a reason.
But in his own time, he was seen in a very different way. The other Hungarian doctors he worked with in the obstetrics clinic in Vienna thought he was mad: he was not interested in the pleasures of the imperial city, he was only living for his job. The Austrian doctors thought him unbearably violent: he had only one goal in mind, the health of the mothers in his care; and for the sake of this sacred cause, he crossed every barrier and broke every rule. And for his boss, the head of the clinic, he was living, unpleasant conscience itself: because if Dr. Semmelweis’s theory is true, and the obstetricians are spreading the disease that has killed so many women, then they are all murderers...
And he had a midwife working alongside him, who saw in him what no one else did: a man who wanted love and peace of mind.
