On the brink of thirty, Ilona decides it’s time to settle down and move in with her boyfriend. But when renovation work starts in their building and she meets Oleg, a Ukrainian labourer, her foundations—both literal and emotional—start to crumble. With shades of Kieślowski’s Camera Buff and echoes of the ongoing invasion of Ukraine, Lithuanian filmmaker Gabrielė Urbonaitė portrays with warmth and sensitivity the trials and tribulations of “adulting” in the age of anxiety—with the shadow of war and trauma of the post-Soviet generation intensifying an already existential crisis. A restrained take on The Worst Person in the World, Urbonaitė deftly subverts romcom clichés of self-discovery with an ironic and incisive script, alongside evocative photography (shot on Super 16mm) that amplifies the physicality of intimacy and the feeling of being caged. There’s only one solution: knocking down walls.
