PAISAJE ÉPICO
Sergi López lends his voice to the Catalan painter Fidel Roig Matóns, who settled in the Argentine city of Mendoza at the beginning of the 20th century. For more than 15 years, he explored the mountain range, creating a series of paintings entitled Epic Landscape. These works depict the heroic journey known as the “Crossing of the Andes” led by the liberator José de San Martín during the wars of independence against the Spanish Empire. Ecuadorian documentary filmmaker Valeria Roig tells her great-grandfather’s story, reliving his journey through arid and perilous terrain while juxtaposing contemporary images with the memories of an artist obsessed with the landscape – so much so that the intensity of the light at that altitude ultimately left him blind. A film of profound poetic resonance about family legacy and an intimate connection with the territory, which this high-altitude painter used as a canvas.
