EL ABANDERADO

This screening is part of the “Turina Trail” trail organised by the Seville City Council in collaboration with the city’s main music representatives to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the death of one of our most internationally renowned composers. El abanderado, which premiered in 1943 receiving great acclaim, was the first of three feature films for which Joaquín Turina (1882–1949) composed the music, collaborating with Jesús García Leoz in this case. A historical drama set at the time of the Dos de Mayo Uprising, when epic patriotism was the order of the day, starring one of Spain’s leading black-and-white film actors, Alfredo Mayo (who would later feature in masterpieces such as Carlos Saura’s The Hunt), alongside Isabel de Pomés (The Tower of the Seven Hunchbacks) and Manolo Morán (Welcome Mr. Marshall).
