Ana Belén (Honorary Goya 2017) returns to the big screen in a leading role for the first time in over two decades, playing an actress looking back on a life lived with burning intensity. As she decides to put an—melodramatic—end to the nostalgia in a hotel that is also not all it once was, she encounters a young man, sparking the beginning of an unexpectedly deep connection. In her fourth feature film, Argentine filmmaker Marina Seresesky (Audience Award at Málaga 2023 for Let the Dance Begin) takes inspiration from Cassavetes’ women on the verge of collapse and Roy Andersson’s tableaux vivants to portray an unlikely pair: two islands in existential isolation against a backdrop of apathetic tourism and decadent parties where all-inclusive applies to everything but happiness, striking a stark contrast with the haunting beauty of the surrounding landscape. Teetering perpetually on the brink of collapse and underscored by subtle gestures, Seresesky’s evocative drama is a subtle exploration of suspended time and shared solitude.
