THE GIRLS WE WANT

Prïncia Car | France | 2025 | 93 min. | O.V. in French, subtitles in Spanish and English
- P.ARMAS 3

Twenty-year-old Omar, a team leader at a summer camp in Marseille, plans to marry 17-year-old Yasmine. Their relationship soon finds itself on the rocks when Carmen, an old friend now working as a prostitute, reappears in their neighbourhood, and circle of friends. The team behind 2015’s acclaimed Mustang reunites for this debut feature from Prïncia Car, who draws on her experience working with marginalised youth to offer a poignant insight into a working-class area of the city where she grew up: a naturalistic yet vibrant world, somewhere between Jacques Demy and Emir Kusturica. With a distinct visual freshness, the Belgian filmmaker explores complex themes of adolescent sexuality and female solidarity, challenging the binary labels placed on women while exposing the pressures imposed on young men. A lively, free-spirited film—much like Carmen herself—that delights in upending preconceived norms, it invites viewers to take a deeper look and rethink the world around them.
