El nombre de la rosa

In a Benedictine abbey in 14th-century Northern Italy, the mysterious death of a monk sends shockwaves through the monastic community. The monks call upon a Franciscan friar to investigate the incident, who, together with his young novice, begins to uncover the sinister secrets hidden within the abbey's walls. Sean Connery delivers an iconic performance in this adaptation of Umberto Eco's best-selling novel, bringing a medieval Sherlock Holmes to life as he embarks on a quest for truth. Far more than just a suspense thriller, the film weaves rich theological and social commentary into its narrative, exploring complex themes including the Church’s wealth and the tension between knowledge and dogma. While Eco's novel ends with the dark triumph of the Inquisition, the film version takes a more optimistic stance, celebrating the power of science and reason. Watch out for a young Christian Slater and an unforgettable multilingual performance from Ron Perlman.
