WHEN WE WERE SISTERS
Lisa Brühlmann | Switzerland, Greece | 2024 | 101 min. | In German, English and Greek with English and Spanish subtitles
An overly affectionate couple go on holiday with their teenage daughters, imposing a pretence of family until the romantic facade is shattered and the girls, who would have obviously preferred to stay at home begin to understand each other. After winning three Swiss film awards with her debut and directing episodes in cult series (Killing Eve, Servant), Lisa Brühlmann returns to feature films with this profoundly sincere and subtle story that echoes her own experience and unfolds between eye-rolls and “just-kill-me-now” gestures. Paula Rappaport and Malou Mösli shine as children who behave more like adults, while Brühlmann portrays the guilt-ridden bad mother in this story of shared loneliness and self-imposed prisons.
