Masha Matzke is currently part of the Preservation Department at the Deutsche Kinemathek. In the last years, she has been dedicated to the restoration of Dore O.’s films, and to the preparation of a monographic book on the filmmaker. The restoration and digitization of the films of the German artist Dore O. is quite an event in European cinema history. Her dreamlike and surreal films, related to the work of filmmakers such as Maya Deren, have been difficult to watch and to program to date due to the bad shape of the existing prints. In this conference Matzke will talk about the role of film preservation in the construction of an inclusive and renewed canon, and also about the particularity of the process of restoration of Dore O’s films.
