Mark Cousins, a silent film story

Women Make Film: A New Road Movie Through Cinema, the enormous documentary work about the History of film made by women by Mark Cousins(Belfast, United Kingdom, 1965), has been another of our leads. The British director has talked with the audience about the keys of this indispensable work to get close to “the silent female voices since the beginning of the film”, has affirmed the author.

Cousins has explained: “In the female directors’ section, I was interested in an approximation to the oldest ones, those who filmed in the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s, because they were the pioneers”. In total, the British creator has addressed 700 films and 183 female directorsin a “passionate love story for the film, but also a story about the very deep anger after erasing many people in the history of this art”.

In addition, he also wanted to make clear that he does not believe that “it exists a film made for men and another one for women, but that the stereotypes are the ones which end up catching the filmmakers”. Finally, he has exampled the works done by the Russian female filmmakers about the war conflicts.

Some directors have overcome the clichés and, that is why, “I also wanted to work with women who did not have the gender ideas so exclusive”, female creators that “had the ability to embrace her male and female part, because the film, after all, is a way of an androgynous art”, has concluded Cousins, who has referred to Jane Fonda or Tilda Swinton as examples since both has taken part in his film as narrators.

Tomorrow, the Seville Festival will take in the press conference of God Exists, Her Name Is Petrunyawith Tena Strugar(11:00 am), the press conference of Sibylwith Justine Triet(11:30 am), the press conference of El PlanwithPolo Menárguez, Antonio de la Torreand Nacho La Casa (12:30 am) and the encounter with Lisa Carlehed(Psykosia), Amin Sidi-Boumediene (Abou Leila)and Xavier Picard (The Prince’s Voyage).

Cousins wanted to close the act showing a sketch of the research work made in Women Make Film: A New Road Movie Through Cinema. A large line of original paper with the themes and the names of the female directors have been included in his work, which will be also exposed in the Hollywood Museum in Los Angeles.
