In collaboration with the Andalusian Film Academy, this round table will discuss diversity and inclusion in film casting. Casting is one of the most important elements in a film. Audiences need to see themselves represented in order to connect with the emotions and lives of the characters. But... do they find a profile similar to theirs on screen? Diversity and parity in fiction are still far from representing reality. Do we tell the story of a woman over 50, someone belonging to the LGTBI community, a transgender person, an immigrant, a foreigner, someone with a disability, someone with an accent from anywhere in Spain or the world? And when it does happen, which is very rare, how do we do it? Do we integrate these people into the script, reflecting real life, where they are part of our society in their different spheres, or do we relegate them to “playing” a specific role, with characters written from a place of prejudice, with specific and often stereotypical roles, which explain why they are part of the story we are telling? On the other hand, are we dispensing with professional actors and replacing them with real people who play themselves?
Speakers:

Marichu Sanz, casting director
