The Seville European Film Festival is launching its Conference on Cinema and Geopolitics as a space for analysis and criticism, from a cinematographic perspective, of the major challenges facing the world in general and Europe in particular. Led by experts from various disciplines, especially from universities in Seville, this conference aims to contribute to the major geopolitical debates of today, with screenings of essential cinema classics and films from the program.
This second session will feature a screening of Gar O'Rourke's film 'Sanatorium' (Ukraine-Ireland / 2025 / 90 min), part of the program for this 22nd edition of the festival, within the European Film Academy section.
After the screening, there will be a discussion on the war in Ukraine and the defense of Europe, based on the real stories of people living and dreaming under the bombs in Odessa. This debate will feature Joaquín Alcaide, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Seville, Jorge Gómez, expert in Russian counterintelligence and former member of the CNI, and Carmen Márquez, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Seville.
Film Synopsis
On the shores of the sea in Odessa, southern Ukraine, stands the imposing Kuyalnik Sanatorium, a dilapidated Soviet-era health resort that has seen better days. Join us for a summer season as dwindling numbers of guests flock here for rejuvenating mud treatments and bizarre electroshock therapies, seeking love, healing, and happiness.
