The thermometer of the 21st Seville Film Festival awards
The 21st Seville Film Festival has been the most eagerly awaited showcase for European cinema and a prelude to what is to come regarding the awards season and cinema releases, with special emphasis on the cinemas' programme this December. A date on which, as the producer and president of the Official Section jury David Puttnam already pointed out in the press conference offered during the festival, many productions aspire to obtain the visibility provided by this event, which has functioned as a platform or springboard for promising works, giving space to almost 90 premieres in Spain among the 168 films scheduled.
Santosh
It is worth noting that the Jury of the Seville Film Festival already honoured three of the productions in the Oscar race in November, with an overwhelming European presence in the Best International Feature Film category (10 out of 15). The British Santosh (released in Spain as Secrets of a Crime) was awarded the Giraldillo for Best Screenplay for Sandhya Suri; while the Danish The Girl with the Needle won four statuettes: Best Director (Magnus von Horn), Best Actress (Trine Dyrholm), Best Photography (Michał Dymek) and Best Art Direction (Jagna Dobesz). The Latvian animated film Flow, which has no dialogue, became one of the discoveries of the season, winning the Best Editing Award (given to the director and editor Gints Zilbalodis), the Grand Jury Award and the Puerta América Award, a prize for which films from different sections of the festival, nominated for the Oscar in the category of Best International Feature Film from their countries, were nominated.
