THE 34TH EUROPEAN FILM AWARDS NOMINATIONS READING

A total of 53 feature films will go forward to the final selection for the European Film Awards, which will be presented in Berlin on 11th December.

‘The Belly of the Sea', by Agustí Villaronga, based on a work by Alessandro Baricco, the only Spanish film in the running for nominations.

The SEFF will screen 18 feature films that are candidates for European awards in its different sections.

 

Seville, 26 October 2021-. On 9th November, the Seville Festival will welcome the official reading of the nominations for the 34th European Film Awards of the European Film Academy (EFA), which will be presented on 11th December in Berlin. The award finalists will be announced at the Abades Triana at 12:00 and will be available in a live broadcast via streaming.

In addition to hosting this initial event in the race for the EFA awards, for nine days the Seville Festival will be a big screen to showcase the shortlisted productions. Of the 53 feature films in the running for the top European film awards, around twenty can be seen at the SEFF.

Among them, the only Spanish film is The Belly of the Sea, by the filmmaker Agustí Villaronga (Palma, 1953). The film, an adaptation of an episode from the novel Oceano mare by the Italian Alessandro Baricco, can be seen in the EFA Section of the Seville festival, which will once again include a selection of the films shortlisted by the European Academy, all of them candidates for the SEFF Audience Award, which will be awarded with the votes of the festival's spectators.

Alongside the Spanish production, this year's EFA Section includes highly celebrated debuts such as Apples, by Greek director Christos Nikou, winner of the 2020 New Waves Award, and 200 meters, by Palestinian director Ameen Nayfeh, winner of the 2020 Extraordinary Stories Award. Also completing this section are Juho Kuosmanen's Compartment nº6, winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the last Cannes Festival, La fam (Fred Baillif), The Worst Person in the World (Joachim Trier), Lamb (Valdimar johannsson), The innocents (Eskil Vogt), Luzzu (Alex Camilleri), The whaler Boy (Philipp Yuryev) and The story of my wife, by Ildikó Enyedi, starring Léa Seydoux and Louis Garrel.

The programme of the 18th Seville Festival includes seven more films in other competitive sections that are candidates for the EFA 2021. Five films in the Official Section include: What do we see when we look at the sky? (Alexandre Koberidze), Ahed's knee (Nadav Lapid), Great Freedom (Sebastian Meise); Fabian - Going to the dogs (Dominik Graf) and A Chiara (Jonas Carpignano). In the New Waves Non-Fiction section, two nominated films will be screened, Babi Yar. Context (Sergei Loznitsa) and Flee (Jonas Poher Rasmussen).

It should also be mentioned that of the 53 films selected to compete in the 34th European Film Academy, seven have already been screened at the 17th edition of the Seville European Film Festival. These are: Ammonite (Francis Lee); Dear Comrades! (Andrei Konchalovsky); Night of the kings (Philippe Lacôte); Never gonna snow again (Malgorzata Szumowska and Michal Englert); Oasis (Ivan Ikic); Quo vadis, Aida? (Jasmila Žbanić) and Conference (Ivan Tverdovskiy).

The selection of films up for nomination for the European Film Academy Awards also includes other categories such as documentaries and short films, among which there are also productions in the Festival's official programme.
