This screening is part of the Canal Sur Radio and Television Gala.
Anyone of a certain age in Spain knows what it means if someone mimes picking up a telephone and says “May I speak with the enemy?” And if you don’t, you should: Gila was one of Spain and Latin America’s most important comedians in the second half of the 20th century. Before catapulting to fame, in Madrid in 1936, Miguel Gila was just a young man living with his grandparents in a modest flat, but the outbreak of war changed his life. He goes to fight alongside his friend Pedro and discovers that the best (or the only) way to survive misery is through humour. The film, directed by Alexis Morante and starring Óscar Lasarte, Carlos Cuevas, Natalia de Molina and Salva Reina, is an optimistic fable and a tribute to a unique comedian. Age is merely a number when it comes to this film, which teaches us that humour is a universal lifeline.
