BOGANCLOCH
For 40 years Jake Williams has lived in the largest forest in north-east Scotland, oblivious to the urban hustle and bustle and the world’s obsession with being connected. In this sequel to his debut feature Two Years at Sea (2011, International Critics Prize at Venice), Ben Rivers revisits this character, intrigued by the recurrence of gestures as ritual – subtle in their changes, even as the world evolves rapidly around them. Documentary-cum-lyrical, contemplative and transcendent experiment – much like the films of Maya Deren or Werner Herzog – Bogancloch uses discreet observation and the striking textures of 16 mm film to immerse us in a liminal space between the real and the imagined. A visually sublime work that connects us with what remains outside the screen(s).
